Hiking in Sugarite

Raton has a way of sneaking up on you when you’re approaching from the Albuquerque side. I arrived for the second time in Raton at about 1:00 p.m., and this time managed to find Aaron and Kristy’s house without getting lost. Just as I was about to call Kristy on the cell from her driveway to tell her I was lost again, she came outside to see what the dogs were barking about. Dang. Ratted out by the dogs.

We decided to take a hike at Sugarite, around Lake Maloya. Little Arya went with us.

This place is certainly not lacking in beauty. Teeny iris are blooming everywhere, and drifts of yellow flowers make it look like sunshine has fallen from the sky to settle in the meadows.

I think Kristy must have some sort of wildlife alert system - she pointed out a hummingbird just sitting in a nearby tree. We’re guessing it might have a nest nearby, because it stayed right there - pretty unusual for a little hummer.

There is a fishing competition going on at Lake Maloya, so even though it’s in the middle of the week, boats floated serenely on the lake, and lots of people stood on the banks.

The sun is warm; the breeze is cool. I’m thinking you’d be hard pressed to find a more idyllic spot.
